Solar Eclipse Impresses As Mexico, US, Canada Go Dark

As a total solar eclipse traversed North America on Monday, cities in Mexico, the US, and Canada experienced darkness. The eclipse began at 11:37 pm IST in Mazatlan, Mexico, marking North Americaโ€™s first total eclipse since 2017. The duration of totality varied up to four minutes depending on the observerโ€™s location. A partial eclipse, where the moon covers only part of the sun, was visible across most of the continental US outside the total eclipseโ€™s path.

A 25-year-old Indian student, missing for a month, was discovered deceased in Cleveland, United States. Mohammad Abdul Arfath, from Hyderabad, is the second such case in a week and the 11th in 2024. The Indian consulate in New York confirmed Arfathโ€™s death. Arfath disappeared around March 7, with his phone switched off. On March 19, his family received a ransom call demanding $1,200, claiming Arfath was kidnapped by a drug-dealing gang, threatening to sell his kidneys if not paid.
