Sri Lanka’s LOP Appeals To PM Narendra Modi Ahead Of Big Vote

India-Sri Lanka

Sri Lank is currently facing its worst ever economic crisis, with its 22 million population facing severe shortages of essentials and fuel.

Colombo: Sri Lanka’s leader of opposition Sajith Premadasa ahead of the big vote in Sri Lanka, in which the house will elect a new president, has made a request to India to keep supporting their motherland irrespective of who is elected as the PM.

Irrespective of who becomes the President of Sri Lanka tomorrow it is my humble and earnest request to Hon. PM Shri

, to all the political parties of India and to the people of India to keep helping mother Lanka and its people to come out of this disaster”, Mr. Premadasa said.

Sri Lank is currently facing its worst ever economic crisis, with its 22 million population facing severe shortages of essentials and fuel.

After months of protests on the streets, the crisis forced former President Gotabya Rajapaksa to tender his resignation. Mr. Rajyapakasha along with his family, many of whom were part of his dispensation, have been accused of mismanaging the country’s economy, leading to the huge crisis.

Reports say the frontrunner in the contest is Ranil Wickremesinghe, a six-time former PM who became acting president after his predecessor stepped down, but is despised by the protestors who see him as Rajyapaksha’s ally.

His principal opponent in the vote will be SLPP dissident and former education minister Dullas Alahapperuma, a journalist who is being supported by the opposition. Alahapperuma pledged earlier this week to form an actual consensual government for the first time in the country’s history.”

Premadasa distanced himself from contesting in the race for the top post supporting Alahapperuma.” For the greater good of my country that I love and the people I cherish,” his party will back Dullas Alahapperuna, a former media minister.
