Mumbai Metro: CM Thackeray Flags Off Trial Runs For Line 2A,7; Ops Likely In Oct’21

These two lines will be fully operational from January 2022, with the first phase of Metro-2A (Dahisar-Aarey) and Metro-7 (Dahanukarwadi to Aarey) commencing from October 2021.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Monday flagged off trial runs for Mumbai Metro’s two new metro rail lines, 2A and 7 that run along the Western Express Highway and Link Road in the western suburbs of the city.

These two lines will be fully operational from January 2022, with the first phase of Metro-2A (Dahisar-Aarey) and Metro-7 (Dahanukarwadi to Aarey) commencing from October 2021.

The maiden trial run commenced from Aakurli Metro station after it was flagged off by Thackeray, accompanied by son and tourism minister Aaditya, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, urban development minister Eknath Shinde.

ā€œThe oscillation trial of prototype six-car rake will be conducted on Line 2A (Yellow Line) and Line 7 (Red line) at various speeds. The sub-systems, other equipment will be tested under dynamic conditions. Integration with signaling, telecom, and Platform Screen Doors will be tested along with different safety tests,” said an MMRDA spokesperson, according to TOI

Metro line 2A is 17.5km long while line 7 is 18.6km long and is part of the larger metro project aimed at providing seamless connectivity for Mumbaikars.

The depot for both the lines temporarily will be at Charkop. Meanwhile, the proposed car depot at Kanjurmarg is under litigation with the Bombay High Court hearing the matter pertaining to the land’s ownership. The Centre had said the Kanjurmarg plot belonged to its salt department. The 102 acres of land at the site, according to MMRDA, are required to construct the car shed for metro lines 3, 4, and 6 and an interchange station for the proposed line 14 with line 6.

Both these Metro lines were sanctioned by the Fadnavis government in October 2015. PM Narendra Modi performed the Bhoomi pujan in the same month.

As of now, only one line of Metro (Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar) is operational in Mumbai. This 12km long east-west Metro corridor was opened in June 2014.
