1,023 Coronavirus Cases From 17 States Traced Back to Tablighi Jamaat Congregation

The Tablighi Jamaat conference was held in Delhi’s Markaz Nizamuddin, the headquarters of the Jamaat, where thousands of followers had visited.

New Delhi| Around 1,023 cases of COVID-19 found in 17 different states have been linked to the Tablighi Jamaat Congregation organized in Markaz Nizamuddin of Delhi, informed the union Health Ministry on Saturday. It also underlined that around 30% of cases found in India are “linked to one place”.

Joint Secretary to the Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal, said in a press briefing that the rate of doubling of cases in India is pretty less than in other countries.

He also informed that a total of 2,902 COVID-19 cases have been reported in India till Saturday, 601 of them are reported since Friday.

Agarwal also told that 68 deaths have been reported in the country till now because of the coronavirus, out of which 12 have been reported since Friday.

He also said that a total of 1,023 cases of coronavirus from 17 states have been traced back to the Tablighi Jamaat Conference organized in Markaz Nizamuddin in Delhi.

“Rigorous contact tracing is on across 17 states which have reported cases related to Tablighi Jamaat congregation,” Lav Agarwal said in a briefing.

“Around 30 percent of the total cases so far are linked to one particular place where we could not sort of understand it and manage it,” he further added.

The Tablighi Jamaat conference was held in Delhi’s Markaz Nizamuddin, the headquarters of the Jamaat, where thousands of followers had visited. Although the conference ended on 15 March, more than 2000 people were holed up in the building because of the lockdown imposed by the state government on 16 March.

Health Ministry official also said that India is looking to increase testing capacity progressively. He also added that there is no need to panic but awareness is also necessary.

“We are increasing our COVID-19 testing capacity progressively,” Agarwal said.
