New Delhi| 2300 people have been evacuated from a building in South Delhi’s Nizamuddin area after 134 people tested positive for coronavirus who attended the congregation in the mosque. Hundreds of people have been staying at the Markaz Nizamuddin, the international headquarters of the missionary Tablighi Jamaat group.
A mass evacuation began in the Nizamuddin area after 7 deaths due to coronavirus were linked to the congregation held at Markaz Nizamuddin mosque. A nationwide search is being conducted for tracing the people who attended the congregation and are suspected to have been infected as well.
The Markaz Nizamuddin officials have stated that there were around 1000 visitors holed up in the building after the lockdown was announced. The area near the religious centre has been sealed off by the officials were protective suits.
A police case has been filed against the mosque administration. Responding on the same, the administration said in a statement, “During this entire episode, Markaz Nizamuddin never violated any provision of law, and always tried to act with compassion and reason towards the visitors who came to Delhi from different States. It did not let them violate the medical guidelines by thronging ISBTs or roaming on the streets.”
An FIR has been filed against 7 people named Maulana Saad, Zeeshan, Mufti Shehzad, M Saifi, Younus, Mohammed Salman and Mohammed Ashraf. Mr. Saad has been missing since 28th March after he was served notice by the police, reported the news agency ANI.
The Union Home Ministry has directed the state administrations to trace the attendees of the congregation who travelled back to their states. 50 have tested positive in Tamil Nadu, 24 in Delhi, 21 in Telangana, 21 in Andhra Pradesh, 10 in Andamans, five in Assam, two in Puducherry and one Jammu and Kashmir after attending the religious congregation.
