Kolkata: Three people were arrested on Monday for allegedly threatening former West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay. One of the three was doctor and other two were his driver, and a typist.
Prima facie, it appeared that the doctor, Arindam Sen, had some mental health issues. Police are trying to trace his medical history. The doctor stated that he had been under mental stress. In some instances, he allegedly wrote threatening letters as he had some grudge. He was also influenced by TV news and wrote such letters.
During the investigation, Hare Street police arrested the typist Bijoy Kumar Kayal (65) — of Kolkata on Wednesday evening from Rasbehari Avenue. Upon interrogation, he revealed that he had typed out the threatening letter on the instructions of Sen.
Accordingly, Sen was arrested from his Raja Rammohan Roy Sarani residence. After his statement was recorded, Sen’s driver Ramesh Shaw (43), too, was arrested.
Sen worked at KPC Medical College. He used to send his driver to Kayal with drafts and got the letters mailed to their intended recipients through Shaw. He had been doing this for the last two years. He has written threatening letters to several people.
On October 25, he got seven letters despatched, one of which mentioned that Bandyopadhay would be killed.
All the accused will be produced before a court on Tuesday.
