According to sources, the 8 people were hiding in different parts of Delhi and united at the airport on Sunday morning to flee the country.

New Delhi| Eight people were held at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Sunday for trying to flee to Malaysia. All eight people have been identified as Malaysian citizens and suspected of hiding their links with the congregation of Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi’s Markaz Nizamuddin.

The eight people were trying to board a relief flight that was supposed to go to Malaysia from India. The Malaysian nationals were trying to board the Malindo Airways flight while all the passenger flights have been suspended amid the lockdown due to coronavirus spread.

According to sources, the 8 people were hiding in different parts of Delhi and united at the airport on Sunday morning to flee the country. It is suspected that they may have attended the religious congregation organized by Tablighi Jamaat last month in Delhi.

The group has now been questioned and may have been handed over to police and health authorities for further action.

More than 2000 people attended the conference organized by the missionary Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi’s Markaz Nizamuddin. Though many people who visited the conference from the first week of March returned to different parts of the country, many were holed up in the Nizamuddin building after the lockdown.

There are 301 cases till now in Delhi linked to the Tablighi Jamaat event where people were holed up in cluster and police had to intervene to clear out the building.

Nizamuddin has become one of the hotspots of coronavirus in the country as different cases have been reported from many states linked to the religious congregation.

The positive cases for coronavirus in Delhi rose to 445 on Saturday.

The Union Home Ministry has blacklisted 960 foreign nationals and has banned their tourist Visas over the Markaz Nizamuddin event.
