The school where APJ Abdul Kalam received his early education has the next 5 days to pay their electricity bill and failure to do so will result in the school being plunged into darkness.
Mandapam Panchayat Union Middle School in Tamil Nadu’s district of Rameswaram has not paid the power bill for the past two years, local electricity board officials stated.
The authorities revealed that power supply to the Primary School in Rameswaram, where Dr Kalam had his primary school education, was cut off as the school had not paid the electricity bill dues for the past two years, amounting to Rs 10,603. Due to the pleas of the locals, the electricity board has decided to give five more days before it cuts power to the school.
This has come as a shock to the school board since the government had assured them that they would be taken care of. “Earlier, we used to pay the bill but stopped doing that after state government took up responsibility for it. Now pending bills are more than Rs. 10,000,” the village education committee president said.
This has not gone down with the locals for they did not expect such a treatment to a school which produced a great visionary and humanist such as Dr Kalam.
