Apple executive dies after Uttar Pradesh Police open fire during midnight check

Lucknow | Vivek Tiwari, regional manager of the multinational company ‘Apple’, died on Friday after being shot by a Uttar Pradesh Police constable during a police-check in Lucknow.

According to reports, the shooting took place at around 1.30 am at the Gomti Nagar Extension area after Tiwari allegedly refused to stop his SUV during the police checking. Tiwari reportedly died of injuries at the hospital in Lucknow.

According to the police, “The man was driving the SUV with a former colleague. Two policemen on patrol flagged his car, asking them to stop. Mr Tiwari first hit the police patrol bike and then rammed a wall while allegedly trying to escape

Constable Prashant Kumar who is detained and questioned in the case along with other constable claimed that he opened fire in self-defence. Speaking to media he said, “We saw a suspicious car. The lights were off. When we reached the car, whoever was inside it started the car immediately. We parked our bike in front of the car. He hit our bike. I waved at him to stop but he reversed the car and hit us again. We asked him to come out. But he reversed for the third time and hit our bike with full force. I fell and then got up. I drew my pistol to scare him. When he tried to run over me, I had to shoot in self-defence.”

Tiwari’s co-passenger in her filed report denied the UP Police’s claim. She said,”The police just waylaid us and tried to stop us forcefully. Sir(Vivek Tiwari) didn’t stop the car. We didn’t realise who they were. There was no accident. We were trying to leave from the side. We hit the bike but they had already gotten off the bike. One of them had a lathi. The man in the front just pulled out a revolver and fired.”

Asking for a proper investigation in the murder case of his husband, Kalpana Tiwari said, “Police had no right to shoot at my husband, I demand Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister to come here and talk to me.” He was injured and later succumbed to injuries after a police personnel shot at his car late last night, on noticing suspicious activity in Lucknow.”
