As Legal Battle Settles, Nephew & Niece of Jayalalithaa Will Inherit Her Wealth

Madras HC declared nephew of Jayalalithaa, J. Deepak and niece J. Deepa as Class II legal heirs entitled to all the properties left behind by her.

Chennai: On Wednesday, the Madras HC asked the Tamil Nadu government to rethink its decision to convert residence of late CM J Jayalalithaa in Chennai into a memorial and declared her niece and nephew as the legal heirs of her property worth several crores.

Located in the upmarket Poes Garden ‘Veda Nilayam’, be converted into the official residence of the CM of the state the court suggested and added a portion of the property can be a memorial if needed.

The HC order comes following ordinance issued by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to permit the state government take interim possession of ‘Veda Nilayam’ and set up a foundation under CM K Palaniswami for the purpose of converting it into a memorial.

The bench said, “Deepak and Deepa are second class legal heirs of the late Chief Minister, being the son and daughter of her late brother Jayakumar,” allowing the petition by Deepak and Deepa, Jayalalithaa’s nephew and niece, seeking letters of administration to administer her properties.

The former AIADMK leader, Jayalalithaa, faced a disproportionate assets case. She died without making a will on December 5, 2016.
