Assam Assembly Election Phase 1 voting tomorrow: The first phase of Assembly elections in Assam will be held tomorrow on March 27, 2021. The 2021 elections will take place in 47 Assembly constituencies in 12 districts of Assam.
According to the Election Commission, 81,09,815 voters including 40,77,210 males and 40,32,481 females are eligible to cast their votes at 1,1537 polling stations in the first phase.
The party faced massive backlash for the CAA law. Much to its headache, the agitation led to the formation of smaller parties who are now trying to sway public opinion against the saffron party. As Amit Agnihotri, columnist for HW News Network points out in his article, BJP going on backfoot over CAA has given hope to several new players like the Assam Jatiya Parishad, backed the All-Assam Students Union (AASU) and the Assam Jatiyabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad, the Raijor Dal, backed by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), activist Akhil Gogoi and 70 ethnic groups and the Anchalik Gana Morcha, floated by Ajit Bhuyan.
The emergence of these new parties, which plan to put the BJP on the defensive over the CAA issue, are an indication that politics over the indigenous Assamese versus the illegal immigrants (from Bangladesh) issue is a key concern among the Assam voters that may get reflected when the ballots are cast.
