Assam: Himanta Biswa Sharma All Set To Be CM, Elected As Party Legislative Chief

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had secured 75 seats while the ‘grand alliance’ led by the Congress bagged 50 in the elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly.

BJP’s Himanta Biswa Sharma is all set to be the next Chief Minister of Assam after he was elected the party’s legislative chief on Sunday afternoon. This comes after Sarbananda Sonowal submitted his resignation to the governor earlier in the day and a clear BJP victory in the May 2 results. Sarma’s name was proposed by Sarbananda Sonowal, state BJP president and BJP MLA Nandita Garlosa at the MLA meeting today.

Ending a week-long silence, the toss-up between the incumbent Sonowal and Deputy CM Sarma seems to have come to an end with the latter all set to take the oath after staking claim to form the government at Raj Bhavan, the governor’s residence.

Biswa Sarma pipped incumbent CM Sarbananda Sonowal to become the next Assam CM

Himanta Biswa Sarma, a former Congress leader, is seen as the architect of the BJP’s two consecutive victories in Assam and had been a strong contender for the chief minister’s post. According to India Today, Sonowal is likely to be given a role in Delhi which he isn’t keen on taking up and wants to be involved in Assam’s politics.

In 2016, Himanta Biswa Sarma had an influential presence in the party and the government. Apart from being Deputy Chief Minister, he also handled the portfolios of finance, PWD and education. He also headed the most important health department that many believe had successfully tackled the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.
