Bengali actress quits BJP says, “lack of initiative and sincerity to further the cause of Bengal”

Kolkata: Srabanti Chatterjee, Bengali actor on Thursday, announced her decision to quit the Bharatiya Janata Party. She had joined the party just before the Assembly polls on March 2 this year and was fielded as a candidate by the BJP.

She cited the BJP’s “lack of initiative and sincerity to further the cause of Bengal” as the reason for her resignation.

Her resignation from BJP sparked speculation about her siding with the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress now. In response to a tweet by a journalist on whether she was “harbouring a massive soft corner for Didi” and if she would join TMC, the 34-year-old actor replied: “Let time speak…”

Before the Assembly elections, she was seen with BJP leaders Kailash Vijayvargiya and Dilip Ghosh during the campaign rallies. Srabanti contested for the Behala West Assembly seat against TMC’s Partha Chatterjee. However, securing only a little over 60,000 votes, she lost the election to the TMC heavyweight.
