Rane had allegedly said that CM Uddhav Thackeray should have been slapped for his “ignorance of the year of India’s Independence”.
Ratnagiri|Union Minister Narayan Rane was arrested from Ratnagiri in Maharashtra after several FIRs were registered against him over his “indecent” comments on Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
Rane’s arrest came after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the sessions court. He approached Bombay High Court for urgent hearing but was told to list the matter through registry by following the procedure.
The BJP leader and the former Chief Minister, Mr Rane, had allegedly said that CM Uddhav Thackeray should have been slapped for his “ignorance of the year of India’s Independence”.
On Monday, at a public meeting in Raigad held as part of the nationwide “Jan Ashirwad Yatra” organised by his party BJP for new ministers in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, Mr Rane claimed that Mr Thackeray forgot the year of independence during his August 15 address and had to check with his aides mid-speech.
“It is shameful that the Chief Minister does not know the year of independence. He leaned back to ask about the count of years of independence during his speech. Had I been there, I would have given him a tight slap,” Mr Rane had said.
After his comments, several FIRs were registered against him by Shiv Sena workers.
