Bulk Of Masks, PPE Kits, Sanitisers Seized By Delhi Customs, Was Being Smuggled To China

New Delhi| On Wednesday, a team from Delhi Customs intercepted a large amount of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), masks, sanitizers, and raw material which were allegedly being smuggled to China, officials informed.

Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), amid the crisis of availability of protective kits in the fight against the covid-19, had banned the export of all surgical, disposable (2/3 Ply) masks, ventilators, and textile raw material for masks and coveralls on 19th March. The export of alcohol-based sanitizers was also banned on April 7 by DGFT.

As per the officials, on basis of intelligence, Air Cargo, Delhi Customs intercepted multiple shipments containing 57 liters of sanitizer in 950 bottles, 952 PPE kits, and 5.08 lakh masks at the courier terminal, New Delhi.

2,480 kg of raw material for masks was also seized by the department which was being smuggled to China.

“The goods were declared as packing materials for pouches and were being smuggled to China. These goods are prohibited for export as per the latest DGFT guidelines,” an official informed.

The Delhi Customs, however, has started an investigation in the above matter.
