Capt Amarinder Singh Resigns From Congress, Launches His Own Party Name

Chandigarh : Over a month after he stepped down as chief minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh officially resigned from the Congress party on Tuesday. He also launched his new party name ahead of assembly elections in the state.. The name of his political party is Punjab Lok Congress.

Singh (79) wrote a seven-page resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

In the letter, Captain Amarinder Singh wrote, “I actually felt deeply hurt by your conduct and that of your children who I still deeply love as much as my own children, having known their father, since we were in school together since 1954, which is for 67 years now.”

Punjab Congress leaders like PCC Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa may be downplaying the poaching threat being posed by Captain Amarinder Singh’s exit, but the party high command is taking the developments very seriously.

Party leaders like Navjot Kaur Sidhu came forward and said that the loyal ones would stay and the ones who owe Amarinder a favour will leave the party. Captain Amarinder Singh, however, claimed that many leaders are in touch with him and will join his party after it is formally launched.

Amarinder who likely soon will be resigning from the Congress party has made his future plans very clear. He has announced that he will launch his own political party soon. The Congress high command is keeping an eye on every development.

Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met four former cabinet ministers, including Rana Gurmeet Sodhi, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Sundar Sham Arora and Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, who belong to captain Amrinder Singh’s camp.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, who also holds a home portfolio, also met Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, and is believed to have discussed the sacrilege issue.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is also meeting Rahul on October 28 to discuss the future strategy of the party, keeping in view the threat being posed by Captain Amrinder Singh, who has already challenged Navjot Sidhu.

Sources close to the Congress say that the leadership has spoken to the dissidents to stop them from joining Captain’s party.

None of the Congress leaders, including captain Amarinder Singh’s wife and former Union Minister Preneet Kaur, was seen at his press conference in Chandigarh on Wednesday, but his political clout and power cannot be ignored.

Sources further added that the party high command has asked Navjot Singh Sidhu to launch the election campaign besides strengthening the party.

Sources also said that Sidhu is adamant about the removal of the Advocate General and DGP. The difference between Sidhu and Charanjit Singh Channi is another challenge which the Congress top brass is facing.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, along with a delegation of nearly two dozen people from various walks of life, is likely to meet Home Minister Amit Shah. Apart from other issues, he will be discussing the farm law controversy.
