It would be a tough call for the BJP high-command to take since Mr Sonowal has a good image and Mr Sarma is an indispensable trouble-shooter for the party.
As most of the states that went to polls last month have got Chief Minister and a cabinet to govern, Assam has still not seen any formal announcement regarding the swearing-in ceremony or who’ll be the face of the BJP-led government in the north-eastern state. Amid the suspense over who’ll be the next CM of Assam, the BJP central leadership has summoned incumbent chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and the most powerful minister in the state Himanta Biswa Sarma to New Delhi today for a meeting to discuss the issue.
Though the saffron party has won a resounding victory as results for last month’s elections were declared on May 2, the post-poll violence in West Bengal had kept the top leadership of the party was busy, delaying a decision on Assam, party president JP Nadda told reporters in Kolkata earlier this week.
Mr Sonowal and Mr Sarma have been asked to reach Delhi by 10 am today. The party wants to discuss the issue face to face with both the leaders before taking a final call, BJP sources have said. This is being done to avoid any sort of factionalism in Assam BJP, they added.

As per sources, BJP president JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP general B L Santhosh and others will be present in the meeting on Saturday with Mr Sonowal and Mr Sarma to resolve the issue.
Before the March-April polls in Assam, the BJP had not announced a chief ministerial candidate. In 2016, the party had projected Sarbanand Sonowal as their CM candidate and formed the party’s first government in the northeast region.
However, this time around, the BJP has been maintaining that it would decide who would be the chief minister of Assam after the elections..
