Centre awaiting Tamil Nadu’s recommendations for CBI probe against Lalit Modi

New Delhi | The Union government is waiting for the recommendations of the Tamil Nadu government since the last 9 months regarding the transfer of an alleged cheating case to the Central Beaureu of Investigation (CBI) against former IPL chairman Lalit Modi.

Responding to an RTI query filed by Activist Saurav Das, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said that no final decision has been taken as the issue is still under consideration of the government. While the Union Ministry in a separate reply said that the government has reviewed the Tamil Nadu government’s reference and forwarded it to the DoPT on 16 November 2017. Meanwhile, the External Affairs ministry said that it is yet to receive any formal request for Lalit Modi’s extradition.

Earlier based on a complaint by BCCI honorary secretary N. Srinivasan the Crime Branch registered a case against Lalit Modi and six others on 13 October 2010. Later the Enforcement Directorate to registered a case against Modi and his companions under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Foreign Exchange Management Act in December 2012.

The case stated a conspiracy to signing contracts on behalf of BCCI with different entities and irregularities for illegal gratification by Lalit Modi and his companions which cheated the BCCI worth 468 crores on several instances.
