The discontent among students across the country seems to have reached its peak. A few days ago, JNU students rocked the national capital of India with the protest march demanding strict action against JNU Professor Atul Johri who was accused of sexual harassment. Now, students across various universities have joined the ‘March for Education’ to protest the Autonomy granted to the Universities.

According to the latest updates, the students started gathering at Mandi house in Delhi from where the march has begun. The ‘March for Education’ has also received support from Delhi University Teacher’s Association. Students from more than five universities have joined the protest including Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Aligarh Muslim University, Jamia University, Banaras Hindu University and Tata Institute of Social Science.

The students who are protesting believe that autonomy will lead to privatisation of the education which will rip the students off their basic rights.

A week ago, Universities Grants Commission had granted autonomy to as much as 62 universities. 21 state universities and 26 private universities were granted “Graded Autonomy” as per UGC regulations. Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar had said that the autonomous status will give the universities freedom to start new courses, set up off-campus centres, research parks, etc.
