Despite 70% Hike In Prices, People In Delhi Continue To Line Up At Liquor Shops

Tuesday morning was no different than Monday morning. It showed that the price hike has had no repercussions as crowds gathered outside to stock up bottles of liquor.

New Delhi| The Delhi government’s plan to discourage people from crowding outside the liquor shops by charging 70% of ‘Corona-fees’ on liquor doesn’t seem to have worked. People on Tuesday continued to line up outside the liquor shop to get their dosage of intoxication despite the high prices. Many areas in the national capital reflected the same scenes on Tuesday resembling those on Monday when the liquor shops were opened for the first time in lockdown. While the social distancing norms were sent for a toss, unruly behavior was reported from nay areas of national capital forcing many shopkeepers to close their shops on Monday. Owing to this situation, the Delhi government decided to charge a hefty amount on liquor with 70% ‘special corona cess’ on normal prices to dissuade people from crowding outside the shops.

However, Tuesday morning was no different than Monday morning. It showed that the price hike has had no repercussions as crowds gathered outside to stock up bottles of liquor.

Many people said that they have no problems with the Delhi government hiking the prices of liquor though the government should ensure the uninterrupted supply of liquor.

News agency ANI reported that people started queuing up outside the shops in the city since 6 AM. Similar were the scenes on Monday morning when the Delhi government allowed the sale of liquor from 9:30 am to 6 pm.

“I’m here since 6 am. Shop was supposed to open at 9 am but police arrived at 8:55 am…who will be responsible if something untoward happens here? We’ve no issue with 70% tax, it’s like a donation from us to country,” a man outside liquor shop in Laxmi Nagar told ANI.

In another such instance, a man could be seen showering petals on customers standing outside the liquor shop in Chander Nagar area of Delhi. He said, “You are the economy of our country, the government does not have any money”.
