Domestic Air Travel To Restart From May 25: Government

Ministry of Civil Aviation will separately issue the standard operating procedures for domestic flights in India.

Exactly 2 months after the central government imposed a nation-wide lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19, the domestic flights will fly again from 25 May. Union Minister for Civil Aviation Hardeep Puri declared on his Twitter handle that India will start its domestic flight operations from 25 May in a “calibrated manner”.

“All airports and air carriers are being informed to be ready for operations from May 25,” he further added.

He also said that the Ministry of Civil Aviation will separately issue the standard operating procedures for domestic flights in India.

On 23 March, the government had canceled all the commercial flights effectively in the wake of coronavirus outbreak.

The government had told the airline companies that all domestic flights should reach their destination by 11.59 pm on 24th March. Flights would not run after that day. Only cargo flights would be exempt from the regulations. On average, 13 million passengers a month and 14 crore passengers travel on domestic flights annually. These restrictions meant that transport in the country had come to a complete standstill from 23rd March.
