Fake Militant Attack in J&K by BJP Workers

BJP’s IT cell in-charge for Kupwara, Ishfaq Ahmad Mir faked a militant attack along with party’s district spokesperson Basharat Ahmad and the PSOs, to get “enhanced security” and “attract attention,” police said.

Two BJP workers and their two personal security officers (PSOs) have been arrested by the J&K police for allegedly faking a militant attack in Kupwara district last week, according to The Indian Express. The attack was faked to get enhanced security, the police said on Tuesday.

BJP party’s IT cell in-charge for Kupwara, Ishfaq Ahmad Mir along with party’s district spokesperson Basharat Ahmad and the PSOs, had faked the attack, the police said. The BJP said it has suspended Ishfaq’s father Mohammad Shafi Mir, who is the party district president for Kupwara, till the probe into the matter is over.

“We are coming up with full details of the incident in a day or two,” said a senior police officer to The Indian Express

On July 16 evening, when Ishfaq was distributing relief in Gulgam village of Kupwara there were reports of a militant attack on him. He had claimed that he was wounded as one of the bullets hit his arm during the attack.

A bullet was accidentally fired by one of Ishfaq’s security personnel, the police said ruling out a militant attack. Also, the other security man, taking it for a militant attack, fired some warning shots.

Later, it was revealed in the police investigation that Ishfaq, Basharat, and their personal security guards had faked the attack.

The BJP worker staged the attack to “get enhanced security” and to “attract attention” of the party leadership, said the police. The injury to Ishfaq was also stage-managed to make it appear as a bullet injury, said sources.

All the accused persons, including the BJP workers and the two PSOs, were presented before the court on Monday and sent to seven days police remand.

Kupwara district president Mohammad Shafi Mir, the father of Ishfaq was suspended as the matter came to light. Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, BJP media in-charge told The Indian Express, “We have suspended him till the inquiry is completed. The inquiry would be completed by July 25. The reason for the suspension is the suspicion that his son faked the attack. The police are investigating.”
