Farm Bills 2020: Punjab Farmers Begin ‘Rail Roko’ Movement, Congress Intensifies Stir

New Delhi| As the controversial Farm bills 2020 crossed Rajya Sabha hurdle, the protests against the contentious bills have intensified. From today onwards, the Congress has decided to hold a nationwide protest against the farmers’ bills, whereas in Punjab the “Rail Roko” movement began from today. While Congress decided to launch a nationwide protest from Thursday to protest the recent passage of two bills related to agricultural reform.

On the other hand, Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti Punjab General Secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher said that it has been decided to organize a ‘Rail Roko’ movement from 24 to 26 September against agricultural bills.

This decision of nationwide protest against agricultural bills was taken during a meeting with the general secretaries and state in-charge at the Congress headquarters in Delhi. After this meeting, Congress leader A.K. Antony said, “From September 24, the Congress will protest across India, asking the government to withdraw the black law.” In the Rajya Sabha, two farm bills were passed with a voice vote despite the demand for a vote by division from the opposition.

The Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti started the Rail Roko movement by sitting on the railway track in Amritsar. In Punjab, the Firozpur division of railways has cancelled the movement of trains on 14 routes ahead of the Rail Roko movement. Firozpur Divisional Manager of Railways Rajesh Aggarwal said that this decision has been taken in view of the safety of passengers. While the decision on the operation of goods trains will be made according to the situation.
