Following Pakistan suspension, India cancels Samjhauta Express

New Delhi | The Indian Railways on Sunday announced that they have cancelled the Samjhauta Express train days after it was suspended by Pakistan.

The railways run the Samjhauta Express on Sundays from Delhi to Attari and back, while Pakistan used to run the train between Lahore and Attari.

“In consequent to Pakistan’s decision to cancel Samjhauta Express 14607/14608 running between Lahore and Atari, the link express train number 14001/14002 running between Delhi and Atari also stands cancelled (sic),” PTI quoted Deepak Kumar, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, as saying.

Two passengers had booked tickets for the Sunday’s service, officials said.

Pakistan on Thursday had announced that it was suspending Samjhauta Express as well as Thar Express trains, to criticise India’s move in Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan strongly disapproved the abrogation of Article 370, calling the move “unconstitutional” and “illegal”.

They downgraded the ties, which included bilateral trade, and sent back Indian envoy, a move that hints at end of diplomatic talks between the two nations.

Pakistan’s minister for railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmad said the service would remain suspended indefinitely. “Till I am Railways minister, Samjhauta Express train service will not operate,” he had said.

Around 117 passengers coming to India from Pakistan aboard the Samjhauta Express were briefly stuck at the Wagah border after Pakistan refused to give entry to the train.
