916 foreigners entered India on tourist visas but violated visa conditions by taking part in a religious gathering: Delhi Police to High Court.
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court, on a plea seeking the release of 916 foreigners, sought response of Delhi Police and the AAP government news agency PTI reported.
The 916 foreign nationals engaged in the Nizamuddin event and are being held in institutional quarantine since March 30 despite having tested negative for COVID-19.
Delhi Police have asserted in the High Court that as many as 916 foreigner nationals, members of the Tablighi Jamaat, who came to India on tourist and e-visas, are subject to face a jail term of up to five years.
Submitting the status report on a clutch of petitions to release the foreigners, the Delhi Police highlighted out that 916 foreigners breached the conditions of their visas by joining the religious gathering in Delhi’s Nizamuddin, and are hence culpable for prosecution under Section 14 of the Indian Foreigners Act, 1946.

On Tuesday, the Delhi Police told the HC that it has neither arrested or detained anyone in connection with the case lodged against members of the Tablighi Jamaat for engaging in the religious gathering at Nizamuddin Markaz in March.
In April, COVID-19 cases in Delhi had surged after many Tablighi Jamaat members, who had attended a large gathering in Nizamuddin, had tested positive.
