French President Macron in India: Our two great democracies have a historic relationship

The Indian government is keen on signing the agreement on the French-assisted Jaitapur nuclear power plant during the visit of President Macron.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday night received the French President, Emmanuel Macron who is on his India visit at the Delhi airport. The two countries are expected to hold talks of co-operation in the areas of counter-terrorism and maritime security. Apart from the two objectives, both the counterparts are also expected to refurbish the Rafale Deal confidentiality agreement to increase the secrecy on the deal.

India and France are also expected to sign 10 pacts of co-operation. Macron today received a ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Macron will visit Raj Ghat and pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi following which he will hold a delegation level talks with PM Modi.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement on Macron’s visit and said that the visit is aimed at strengthening the bilateral economic, political and strategic dimensions of Indo-French engagement. The visiting President while talking to media also hailed the relation between India and France as historic. He said, “I think we have very good chemistry, our two great democracies have a historic relationship.”

Later in the day, he will also hold an address at Town Hall where as much as 300 students from different institutions and fields are expected to mark their presence. Macron will also take part in knowledge summit where hundreds of academicians and scholars are expected to participate.

The Indian government is also keen on signing the agreement on the French-assisted Jaitapur nuclear power plant. To strengthen the Indo-French ties in the area of Solar Energy, the French President will also visit the International Solar Alliance (ISA) on Sunday. ISA is a joint effort proposed by India and France. He will then visit Taj Mahal in Agra on the same day.

However, the centre of attraction remains the Varanasi visit of the French President on March 12. Varanasi is a parliamentary constituency of PM Modi. It is also a shift in the schedule as PM Modi usually hosts the visiting world leaders in Ahmedabad.
