Harmony Foundation Announces Awardees Of Mother Teresa Memorial Awards For Social Justice

Previous recipients of this prestigious Award have been – Nobel Laureates Ms. Malala Yousufzai, H.H. The Dalai Lama, Mr. Kailash Satyarthi.

The Harmony Foundation has announced the Mother Teresa Memorial Awards For Social Justice, to be
hosted virtually on December 27, 2020.

“The pandemic this year was unforeseen, where more than 1.5 million people lost their lives. Hence, it
becomes imperative to honour those who contributed extraordinarily and led by an example in
bettering human lives. Thus, the theme for this year’s awards is, ‘Celebrating Compassion In Times Of
Covid,” the foundation said in its press release.

One of the awardees named by the foundation is Dr Anthony Fauci, who led the US task force against Covid-19.

He and his task force were among the first ones to realize the seriousness of this pandemic. His extraordinary efforts in leading his task force to create awareness about the pandemic and suggesting
preventive measures like the use of masks, social-distancing, self-quarantine and his efforts in researching for the vaccine, has helped all across the globe in surviving the terrors of this pandemic. He became the ‘de facto’ public health spokesperson to help and guide all countries, serving as an example for healthcare workers and people all across the globe to follow,” the foundation said about Dr Fauci.

Another awardee is Fr. Fabio Stevenazzi, about whom the foundation said: “His decision to return to medical practice in order to help those infected with COVID 19 has thrust him to be the modern day example of St Charles Borromeo who in 1576 during the Great Plague that hit the city of Milan and cut the population by half, stayed behind to nurse the sick and renovate hospitals. Hence his decision to transform from healing souls to healing bodies is an expression of pastoral compassion necessary in these times. It is
also an embodiment of the church as a “field hospital”. Preferring to be a doctor rather than an idle parish priest, referring to his humorous quote, has distinguished him as the modern day Good Samaritan.”

Dr. Pradeep Kumar, Cristian Fracassi and Alessandro Romaioli, Sanjay Pandey, IPS (DG Home Guards), Vikas Khanna, KK Shailaja (Minister of Health Kerala) are also among the people bestowed with the award.

Instituted in 2005, these Awards, the only ones endorsed by Sr. Prema, the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata, celebrate and commemorate the memory and legacy of Mother Teresa, canonized a Saint by Pope Francis in the Vatican.

Previous recipients of this prestigious Award have been – Nobel Laureates Ms. Malala Yousufzai, H.H. The Dalai Lama, Mr. Kailash Satyarthi. We have also awarded the likes of the current Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, former Prime Minister of Malaysia Dr. Mahathir Mohamad; former Deputy Speaker of the United Kingdom’s House of Lords Baroness Caroline Cox, and many others.

The award ceremony will be telecasted on the 27th of December at 6 pm (IST) on YouTube Live.
