After Heavy Rains, 4-Storey Building Collapses In Mumbai’s Malvani, 11 Dead

Many people including some children were inside the building when it collapsed.

On Wednesday night at 11.10 pm, a four-storey building in Malvani area of Malad West in Mumbai collapsed, taking 11 lives and seriously injuring 7 other people. The injured have been admitted at BDBA Municipal General Hospital.

After the incident, the fire brigade soon arrived at the place. Fifteen people trapped in the debris were rescued with the help of the local police. Debris removal is still underway.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said that three other buildings nearby are in ‘dangerous’ condition and the residents have been evacuated.

The building collapsed due to heavy rains in the city, according to Maharashtra minister Aslam Shaikh.

Monsoon marked its arrival in financial capital Mumbai and the suburbs on Wednesday, a day ahead of its schedule. Heavy rainfall led to flooded roads and closed subways. Along with local trains and buses, traffic and daily life was affected in many parts of the city.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange alert’ for various districts, including Mumbai, for the next four days.
