Hunger Amid Pandemic: Migrants Loot Food, Water Bottle At Delhi Rly Station

The migrants have been the worst affected people in India due to the two-month-long lockdown which is still in effect due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

New Delhi: While the world battles the pandemic, India has unleashed its hunger crisis as the COVID-19 crisis that has left numerous migrants jobless, displaced and starving.

On Friday, push-cart with cartons of food and water is stopped and looted by migrant workers who then start fleeing, videos from the Old Delhi railway station show, NDTV reports.

The cart was stopped at the platform by a couple of men and within minutes a crowd gathered to collect whatever they could get their hands on. Some even snatched the food from others.

After grabbing food, they flee from the spot.

The cart had four cartons of snacks which included chips, biscuits and other packed products and water bottles.

No Railway officials or police officers were nearby to restore order.

Only Shramik Special trains for migrant workers are operational from the Old Delhi station to ferry stranded labourers home.

The total cases in India surged to 1,31,868 including over 54,000 cured/discharged or migrated and 3,867 deaths amid lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19.

In the past 24 hours, 147 casualties were recorded. A staggering 6,767 cases new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the last 24 hours, highest so far.
