High Court Judges are elevated on impressions and not performance: Justice Chelameshwar

Advocating more transparency in the selection process, Justice Chelameshwar said that the assessment should be put on record.

Months after raising the issue of organizational mismanagement in the Supreme Court, Justice Chelameshwar has stoked a controversy yet again. On Monday, he said that more transparency should be brought to the Supreme Court judges appointment procedure. Levelling shocking allegations on the Supreme Court collegium, he said, the elevation of high court judge to Supreme court does not depend on his performance but on the impressions.

Justice Chelameshwar was speaking at a panel discussion themed ‘The Indian Higher Judiciary: Issues and Prospects’. Advocating more transparency in the selection process, he said that the assessment should be put on record. “It would eliminate most of the problems,” he remarked.

In a shocking revelation, he said that High court judge’s performance assessment is rarely done and most of the times the assessment is decided upon the impression.

Making harsh comments on the judicial reforms, he said that the day the Apex Court will have 31 Judges, every state in the country will contend for a seat.
