Ashok Lavasa had opposed Election Commission decision giving clean chit to PM Modi and Amit Shah in cases of violation of Model code of conduct.
New Delhi| Novel Singhal Lavasa, the wife of Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa, has come under the scrutiny of the Income Tax Department on the allegations of alleged tax evasion. Official sources gave this information on Monday. Sources said that the Income Tax Department has issued a notice to Lavasa’s wife asking them to share some specific details in their income tax returns in relation to her being on the board of directors of about 10 companies.

On the notice by the Income Tax Department, Novel Singhal said that she has paid all the taxes and according to the Income Tax Law, has given details of all types of earnings. She said, “I have worked at State Bank of India for 28 years and due to experience in the field of banking, I am still involved in professional work including the work of independent director in some companies.”
She said, “I have responded to all the income tax department’s notices after August 5, 2019 and I am cooperating in the process of the income tax department.” The officials said that after the initial investigation, the department asked them to investigate their personal financial matters.

During the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa had opposed Election Commission decision giving clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah in cases of violation of Model code of conduct. Along with this, he also refused to attend the Election Commission meetings. According to the media report, Lavasa gave a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, lodging his dissent to giving a clean chit to Modi and Shah saying that he will not attend any meeting of the commission till his dissenting vote is taken on record.
