Increase of 240 COVID-19 Cases in Last 12 Hours, India Now Has 1637 Confirmed Cases

New Delhi| India has reported 240 new COVID-19 cases in the last 12 hours, with the number rising to 1,637 on Wednesday, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said. The toll rose to 38, while 133 patients have been cured or discharged.

Several cases of COVID-19 in Delhi as well as in other states have been traced to a congregation held at the Nizamuddin Markaz in the national capital last month, which thousands attended. Many state governments are trying to trace the people who returned after attending the event.

As many as seven people – one from Kashmir and six from Telangana, died of COVID-19 in the days following the congregation.

Authorities launched a nationwide search on Tuesday for participants of a huge religious gathering held earlier this month in the national capital’s Nizamuddin area, which has become the new epicentre of the deadly virus pandemic amid fears that thousands present there could have carried the infection to the length and breadth of the country.

Thousands of participants of the Tablighi Jamaat held in mid-March in Nizamuddin, which is also home to a famous Dargah, are known to have returned to their homes in virtually every state including Telangana, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Gujarat.

Thirty people who attended the Tabligh-e-Jamaat event in south Delhi’s Nizamuddin, now identified as a COVID-19 hotspot, have been placed under quarantine in Pune while 12 are ib quarantine in Karnataka even as other states make a rush for contact tracing to identify possible positive cases.

In Delhi, novel Coronavirus cases have risen to 120, according to the state’s health minister Satyender Jain. As many as 18 new cases were reported in Maharashtra today, including 16 in Mumbai and two in Pune. A doctor in Delhi, working at a Government hospital, has also tested positive. Meanwhile, nationwide tracking of people who attended the Markaz in Nizamuddin, Delhi is on.

According to Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, as many as 617 people in Delhi, who was at Markaz in Nizamuddin, have shown Coronavirus symptoms. “2,361 people were brought out from there (Markaz, Nizamuddin) out of which 617, who had symptoms have been taken to hospitals, others have been quarantined,” Sisodia was quoted as saying by ANI.
