India successfully targeted a live satellite on low earth orbit: PM Modi

New Delhi | Prime Minister Narendra Modi today in his address to the nation announced that India’s anti-satellite weapon A-SAT has successfully targeted a live satellite on a low earth orbit.

Addressing the nation PM Modi said,” India has achieved a space milestone. Our scientists have shot down a live satellite on a low earth orbit. We have become only the 4th nation to achieve this feat.” He named this entire operation as ‘Mission Shakti’. He further added that the elite club India has entered which earlier had America, Russia, China.

Speaking further on operation PM Modi said, “Mission Shakti’ operation was a difficult target to achieve which was completed successfully within three minutes of launch.” He also called this mission as an important step towards securing India’s safety, economic growth and technological advancement.

He further informed that entire excercise is for the security of the nation and won’t be used against any other country. He said,” The A-SAT missile will give new strength to India’s space prog. I assure int’l community that our capability won’t be used against anyone but is purely India’s defence initiative for its security.We’re against arms raised in space. This test won’t breach any int’l law or treaties

“Today, we have enough satellites that are contributing in various segments such as agriculture, disaster management, communication, weather, navigation etc,” added Modi.

Anti-satellite weapons (ASAT) are space weapons designed to incapacitate or destroy satellites for strategic military purposes. Several nations possess operational ASAT systems, with others in development or design. Although no ASAT system has yet been utilised in warfare, several nations have shot down their own (defunct) satellites to demonstrate their ASAT capabilities in a show of force.
