India took 12 days to reach 1000 cases, numbers were higher in developed nations: Health Ministry

In a media briefing, the Union Health Ministry Monday confirmed that 92 new cases and four deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the last 24 hours.

New Delhi| The Health Ministry clarified that the country is still in the local transmission stage, if it reaches the community transmission stage, the ministry will admit it but the country is not there yet.

“To ensure we do not go back to zero please adhere to government guidelines 100%. Even if it is 99% it will put us back on square one”, said Luv Aggarwal, the Union Health Ministry’s joint secretary.

While briefing the media, Luv Aggarwal confirmed that 92 new cases of COVID19 and four deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking total cases to 1071 and number of deaths to 29 in India.

Dr R R Gangakhedkar of ICMR, said that 115 ICMR labs are functional and 47 private labs have also been approved. Till now, 38,432 tests have been conducted. 1,334 people have been tested by these labs in three days, he added.

In a media briefing, the Union Health Ministry’s joint secretary Luv Aggarwal said, “We took 12 days from 100 to 1000 cases in 12 days, in developed countries with less population this has been 3000, 5000 or 8,000. This is because of early measures of isolation, lockdown etc”.

Replying to a question on the plight of stranded workers, PS Srivastava, an official from the home ministry said, the home secretary has directed all District Magistrates & Superintendents of Police to ensure food & shelter for stranded workers & full wages by employers. They were also directed to ensure that landlords don’t ask for rent from labourers, added Srivastava.
Meanwhile, the total number of coronavirus cases across the world surpassed seven lakh, with over 1,30,000 cases in the United States. And the worst affected state in the US is New York, which has over 1,000 deaths. US President Donald Trump said the death rate in the country would likely peak in another two weeks. So far the over death toll is 2,460 from the respiratory disease, according to a Reuters tally.
