Jammu city on edge after communal tension rises due to the Kathua rape case

Since the arrest of eight alleged culprits in the brutal gangrape and murder of the eight-year-old girl in Kathua that shook the nation to its core, it seems people supported by ambiguous groups and political parties are ready to spark up a communal fire in this highly controversial region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Recently, two calves turned up dead under questionable circumstances; one was shot in the head while another’s throat was cut open, igniting communal tension which forced the authorities to shut down the internet in Jammu so as to stop people from falling prey to baseless rumours in the region. This led to angry protesters clashing with the security force and blocking the Jammu-Pathankot highway for hours.

“There are some people in Congress in Jammu who still want to vitiate the atmosphere. But we will deal with them internally,” Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), Vice President and MLC, Ghulam Nabi Monga said.

“Some people whom I won’t name have been trying to support some elements who were trying to divide the state on communal lines but we won’t tolerate it,” Monga said.

In Gandhi Nagar’s Gole Market, Subash, a newspaper seller, says he is watching the situation turning from bad to worse in coming weeks and months, particularly before the elections of 2019.

In short, people in Jammu and Kashmir are fed-up of politicians playing petty politics over their tragedy.
