Kanhaiya Kumar meets Rahul Gandhi, likely to join Congress

New Delhi : Former JNU student and Communist Party of India (CPI) leader, Kanhaiya Kumar is rumoured to join Congress after his meeting with Rahul Gandhi. Kumar, sources close to him said, was feeling suffocated in the CPI. He met Gandhi on Tuesday and the two are learnt to have discussed his entry into the Congress.

Congress on speculations

Congress has denied confirmation on this speculation, senior spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Many people meet Rahul Gandhi and discuss issues. I don’t want to comment on this issue. If there’s anything we will surely announce it.”

According to the Indian Express sources Gujarat MLA Jinesh Mevani too is in touch with the Congress leadership. The Congress had helped Mevani in the last Assembly elections by not fielding a candidate from the Vadgam seat in Banaskantha district of northern Gujarat.

Kanhaiya according to the Indian Express sources was feeling suffocated in the CPI.

CPI on exit

When asked about Kumar’s possible exit, CPI general secretary D Raja said he has only heard speculation in this regard. “I can only say that he was present at the national executive meeting of our party earlier this month. He spoke and participated in the deliberations,” Raja said.

Political career of Kumar until now

According to India Today, sources said that Kanhaiya Kumar was offered to join the party during the Bihar elections. Sources have also said that the party has a plan in place for him in Congress.

Kanhaiya Kumar, a member of the CPI, is known for his rousing speeches, especially the ones during his JNU days. He took the political plunge and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Begusarai seat and was fielded against BJP leader Giriraj Singh.

Kanhaiya Kumar lost out to Giriraj Singh in the elections and is now seeking to join the Congress party ahead of the next Bihar assembly elections.

The Congress, on the other hand, had performed poorly in the assembly elections tightly fought between the alliances led by RJD and JDU. The Congress could win only 19 of the 70 seats it contested while RJD won more than half of the 144 seats it contested.
