Landslide: 36 dead, Over 30 Feared Trapped In Maharashtra’s Raigad District

36 people have died in Mahad tehsil of Raigad district in Maharashtra after multiple landslides in the area on Thursday evening. NDRF rescue operations going on.

At least 36 people have died in a landslide near a village in the coastal Raigad district of Maharashtra as heavy rainfall over the last two days has caused flooding in parts of the coastal region. The death toll due to the series of landslides in Mahad tehsil is likely to rise, police said on Thursday.

While 32 bodies were found in one spot in Talai, four others were recovered from another location in Sakharsutarwadi village. Fifteen people have been reportedly rescued so far, but over 30 to 35 more are feared trapped under the debris, officials say.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and assured him of complete cooperation and help from the Centre in tackling the flood situation.

In a tweet, PM Narendra Modi said, “Anguished by the loss of lives due to a landslide in Raigad, Maharashtra. My condolences to the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Narendra Modi added, “The situation in Maharashtra due to heavy rains is being closely monitored and assistance is being provided to the affected.”

Rahul Gandhi, too, tweeted saying, “My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I appeal to Congress workers to assist in relief and rescue work. Rains continue to cause disaster and disruptions in many parts of Maharashtra. Please stay safe.”

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescue operations are going on in these regions with the hope of saving as many lives as possible.
