Kathmandu| Amidst a border dispute with India, Nepal Prime Minister has made another controversial statement. Nepalese PM K P Sharma Oli said that Lord Rama was a Nepali, not an Indian. He also said that the real Ayodhya is not in India but in Birgunj, Nepal.

Oli was speaking at an event organized on the occassion of Bhanu Jayanti at his residence. He also accused India of cultural repression. Oli said that Nepal’s contribution to science was always ignored.

Oli said, “We have always believed that we gave Sita to Prince Rama. But, we also gave Lord Rama. We gave Rama from Ayodhya, but not India.” He said that Thori, a small village of Birganj, 135 km from Kathmandu was in fact Ayodhya. “We have been culturally repressed and the facts have been twisted,” he said.

Justifying his statement, Oli said it is claimed that Lord Rama was from Uttar Pradesh in India. “How did he travel so far to marry Sita from Janakpur? There were no phones at that time, then how did he communicate?
During ancient times marriages were only done in the nearby states. Nobody went so far as to get married,” Oli asked.

Oli’s statement comes at a time when there is a border dispute between India and Nepal. Nepal has approved its new political map. In this, the Indian territory on the border with Tibet, China and Nepal, Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura have been described as part of Nepal.
India had strongly objected to Nepal’s actions and said without naming China that Nepal is doing so at the behest of others. Apart from this, in his latest statement, Oli said – Balmiki Nagar which is presently in West Champaran district of Bihar, some part of it is also in Nepal.
