Love Is In The ‘Air’: TN Couple Gets Married On A Flight During Lockdown; DGCA Orders Probe

The couple, in fact, had tied the knot in a private wedding ceremony last week. But soon after the relaxation was announced, both of them finalized the plan of the ‘aircraft wedding’ in order to make their special day memorable.

A couple from Madurai, Tamil Nadu got married on board a chartered flight to Thoothukudi in the presence of their close friends and family on May 23. 130 people were in attendance. The aviation watchdog, Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), on Monday initiated an investigation over reports of mid-air marriage ceremony and has ordered taking the crew off duty.

On Saturday, the Tamil Nadu government extended the ongoing lockdown for another week till May 31, due to the increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the state.

Ahead of the complete lockdown though, the state government allowed a one-day relaxation and allowed all stand-alone shops to function till 9 pm over the weekend.

They also said that all the people present in the aircraft were their relatives and had tested RT-PCR negative before boarding the flight.

Meanwhile, the DGCA has asked for registering a complaint against all passengers who were part of the onboard marriage.

Airline carrier Spicejet said “A SpiceJet Boeing 737 was chartered by a travel agent in Madurai on May 23 for a group of passengers for a joy ride post their wedding. The client was clearly briefed on Covid guidelines to be followed and denied permission for any activity to be performed on-board” according to ANI.

It added “despite repeated requests & reminders, the passengers didn’t follow COVID guidelines & the airline is taking appropriate action as per rules”

Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) says it has issued a show-cause notice to SpiceJet and sought a detailed report on the incident involving marriage.
