Rajesh Tope made an important announcement of extending the insurance cover of Rs. 50 Lakh to all the workers under the government- permanent, contractual, or daily wagers.
Mumbai| In his address to the state on Friday, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope made an important announcement of extending the insurance cover of Rs. 50 Lakh to all the workers under the government- permanent, contractual, or daily wagers.
“Earlier, the central government had declared 50 Lakh insurance for people working in the health sector. Following this lead, the Maharashtra government has extended this insurance cover to all the permanent, contractual, daily wage employees under the various government departments. If any of these employees, unfortunately, catch up with the infection and succumb to the virus, we’ll be providing Rs. 50 lakh insurance,” Rajesh Tope said in his address.
HW News had earlier raised the issue of sanitary workers not being covered by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) under this insurance. The latest developments suggest that the sanitary workers will now be covered under the insurance and their families will be provided with Rs. 50 Lakh if they, unfortunately, succumb to Covid-19 while working on the frontline.
MNS leader Ketan Naik had marched to the BMC premises along with other MNS leaders and sanitation workers to get these workers covered under the insurance. After their protest, the BMC had invited them for a meeting to discuss the pertaining issue. In this meeting, since it is a crisis situation due to Covid-19, they had demanded the same facilities for contractual workers that are given to permanent workers. This included Rs. 50 lakh insurance cover announced by the central government. The MNS leaders had raised the voice against BMC for not caring about the contractual workers alleging that the BMC doesn’t value their lives.
The recent announcement by the health minister comes as a relief for those contractual workers who are working at the forefront risking their lives.
