Maharashtra Likely To Extend Lockdown In Mumbai, Other Red Zones

Maharashtra CM considers lockdown extension in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and cities such as Pune, Malegaon & Aurangabad till May 31.

Mumbai| The government of Maharashtra is likely to continue the lockdown in the state till May end and is expected to send a report to this effect to the central government by Friday.

PM Modi, in his address to the nation on Tuesday, had said a fourth phase of the lockdown was likely beyond May 17. The day before that, in a videoconference with all CMs, he had intimated that a total exit from the lockdown was not reasonable, but had also asked states to submit plans to boost economic activity.

CM Uddhav Thackeray also asked the state administration to submit a report on the activities that can be permitted outside containment zones in cities that fall in the red zone.

CM held a meeting to discuss the way ahead after May 17, when the prevailing national lockdown ends. The meeting was attended by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, Water Resources Minister Jayant Patil, Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, Industries Minister Subhash Desai and Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde at Old Mayor bungalow in Dadar.

It was unanimously accepted upon that the lockdown has to be continued in several parts of the State, especially in red zones such as the Mumbai and Pune metropolitan regions, Malegaon and Solapur, as per a senior minister.

The total number of cases in Maharashtra– the worst affected state by the virus, reported 27,524 with over 1,000 deaths. It also recorded it’s the highest spike with 1,600 cases in the past 24 hours.

Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, figures climbed above 14,500.

The total cases in India surged to 81,970 including over 27,000 cured/discharged or migrated and 2,649 deaths amid lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19.
