Malegaon blast case: NIA special court rejects Lt Col Purohit’s application

Mumbai | The NIA Special Court on Wednesday denied relief to Lt Col Srikant Purohit in the 2008 Malegaon Blast case.

Rejecting Purohit’s application to get untruncated documents, the NIA Court said that it is a tactic and a hidden agenda of the applicants to prolong the trial. In its application, Purohit had asked for statements of all the witnesses from ATS and NIA charge sheet. Earlier the Bombay High Court also refused to stay trial court proceedings against  Purohit. The High court bench also had adjourned the hearing for two weeks.

The Supreme Court on Monday had asked the Bombay High Court to deal with  Lt. Col. Purohit’s plea stating that he was being prosecuted in the matter without any valid sanction. On November 2 a special court had commenced the formal trial against Purohit, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur and five other accused after framing of charges under various penal law in the Malegaon blast case.

Six people were killed and over 100 injured when an explosive device strapped on a motorcycle went off near a mosque in Malegaon, a town about 200 km from north Maharashtra, on September 29, 2008.
