MEA Summons Pakistan High Commission Chief, Lodges Protest Over Handing Management of Kartarpur Corridor To Non-Sikh Body

The ministry said that Pakistan’s decision is unilateral and condemnable. It is also against the spirit of Kartarpur Sahib Corridor.

New Delhi| The Ministry of External Affairs summoned the head of the Pakistan High Commission on Friday. The ministry lodged a strong protest against the handing over the responsibility of managing and maintaining Kartarpur Sahib corridor to non-Sikhs. It noted that this decision of the Government of Pakistan was arbitrary and condemnable.

MEA spokesman Anurag Shrivastava said that Pakistani CDA Aftab Hasan Khan has been clearly told that the decision is against the religious sentiments of the Sikh community.

The Government of Pakistan has removed the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, which is managing the Kartarpur Gurdwara and has handed it over to a non-Sikh body. The Government of India has condemned this decision.

Requested to change the decision

The Foreign Ministry has requested Pakistan to change this arbitrary decision. The ministry says that Pakistan’s decision is unilateral and condemnable. It is also against the spirit of Kartarpur Sahib Corridor. Religious feelings of the Sikh community are attached to this place. We have expressed serious concern over this decision. The rights of minorities are being targeted in Pakistan. Such an action exposes the Pakistani government’s claims of rights and protection of religious minorities.

Kartarpur Corridor was opened on 9 November

Pakistan has taken this decision a few days before the completion of one year of the inauguration of the historic Corridor. The four-kilometer long corridor connects the Dera Baba Nanak temple of Gurdaspur in India to the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan. It was opened for devotees on 9 November.

It is believed that Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, came to Kartarpur in 1522. He had spent the last 18 years of his life here. It is believed that the place where Guru Nanak Dev died in Kartarpur, this Gurudwara has been built. This gurudwara is in Narowal district of Pakistan across the river Ravi.
