Mehbooba Mufti Says She’s “Placed Under House Arrest”

On Monday, the PDP leader had raised objection over booking of Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s family under the stringent UAPA law.

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and chief of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, said on Tuesday that she’s been “placed under house arrest”.

In a tweet targeting the centre’s “normalcy” claims, Ms Mufti said: “GOI expresses concern for the rights of Afghan people but wilfully denies the same to Kashmiris. Ive been placed under house arrest today because according to admin the situation is far from normal in Kashmir. This exposes their fake claims of normalcy.”

She also attached two pictures of what looked like a locked entrance to her house.

On Monday, the PDP leader had raised objection over booking of Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s family under the stringent UAPA law after videos of his body being wrapped in Pakistan’s flag went viral.

Refering to the booking of Geelani’s family as GoI’s “paranoia and ruthlessness”, the former J&K Chief Minister said: “Having turned Kashmir into an open air prison, now even the dead aren’t spared.A family isn’t allowed to mourn & bid a final farewell as per their wishes. Booking Geelani sahab’s family under UAPA shows GOI’s deep rooted paranoia & ruthlessness. This is New India’s Naya Kashmir.”

Earlier, on September 1, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away. He was 92 years old. He was a pro-Pakistani Kashmiri separatist leader. He was previously a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir but later on founded Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.
