Adani Airport Holdings becomes the country’s largest airport infrastructure company after taking over the management control of the Mumbai International Airport.
The Adani group took over the management control of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai on Tuesday. The Adani-led Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) became the country’s largest airport infrastructure company after taking it over from its previous owner, the GVK group.
With the current take over, the management and development portfolio of the AAHL owns a total of eight airports and will also have control over 33 per cent of the country’s air cargo traffic.
In a tweet, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said, “We are delighted to take over management of the world class Mumbai International Airport. We promise to make Mumbai proud. The Adani Group will build an airport ecosystem of the future for business, leisure and entertainment. We will create thousands of new local jobs.”

According to the Adani group, this announcement comes after the meeting held earlier on Tuesday by the Mumbai International Airport Limited’s board and follows approvals received from the central government, state government, as well as the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) of Maharashtra.
“Our airport expansion strategy is intended to help converge our nation’s tier 1 cities with the tier 2 and tier 3 cities in a hub and spoke model. This is fundamental to enabling a greater equalization of India’s urban–rural divide, as well as making international travel seamless and smooth,” said the Adani Group chairman.
The construction of the Navi Mumbai International Airport will begin next month by the Adani group. The airport will be commissioned in 2024.
The AAHL won the mandate to operate and renovate six airports – Ahmedabad, Guwahati, Lucknow, Jaipur, Mangaluru, and Thiruvananthapuram, for a term of 50 years through a tendering process conducted by the Airports Authority of India.
