Naroda Patia Massacre case: Main accused Maya Kodnani acquitted while Babu Bajrangi’s convinction upheld

Maya Kodnani, then minister in Gujarat government was the main accused in the infamous Naroda Patia case in which ninety-seven persons were killed.

In a yet another shocking verdict, Maya Kodnani-the main accused in Naroda Patia massacre which happened just a day after the Godhra carnage has been acquitted by the Gujarat High Court. However, the Gujarat High Court upheld the conviction of Babu Bajrangi.

Maya Kodnani, then minister in Gujarat government was the main accused in the infamous Naroda Patia case in which ninety-seven persons, mainly women and children, were killed. She was charged with inciting a mob to take revenge for the deaths of kar sevaks killed in the Godhra train carnage in 2002.

A special SIT court had earlier convicted 32 persons including Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi while acquitted 29 others. The court had sentenced a 28-year jail term for Kodnani and imprisonment till last breath for Babu Bajrangi. A 31 years jail term was sentenced to other ten accused. Rest all accused were handed down 24-year imprisonment.

However, today the Gujarat High Court relieved Kodnani of the charges on the grounds of Benefit of Doubt.
