The Delhi offices of digital news portals, Newslaundry and Newclick were raided by Income Tax officials on Friday. According to the reports, the raids are currently ongoing. Newsclick had earlier been subjected to the ED raid in February this year on the allegations of money laundering.

According to a report in The Wire, the IT officials arrived at the Newslaundry office in Sarvodaya Enclave at around 11:40 am today. There were around 20 people present in the office at the time. Their phones were confiscated, switched off and kept on a table, the Wire reported. At around 3 PM, some employees were allowed to leave the office.

Similar scenes unfolded at the office of Newsclick. Here, the IT officials asked the employees to switch off their phones and not to contact anybody. Staff working from home were unable to establish contact with them. Reportedly, there is a search and seizure order.

Earlier this year, the IT departments had also raided the premises of the Bhaskar group which runs the Dainik Bhaskar newspaper. The media house had been critical of the Modi govt’s handling of the second wave of the pandemic.
