‘Nihangs’ Chop Off Punjab Cop’s Hand, Injure 2 Other Policemen

After a group of people were asked to show their curfew pass due to movement restrictions, they attacked Punjab policemen.

Patiala| A Punjab policeman’s arm was severed and two of his colleagues were injured after a group of Nihangs (Sikhs armed with traditional weapons) attacked them at Sanaur vegetable market in Punjab’s Patiala district on Sunday, the police said.

They were travelling in a vehicle when the cops stopped them near a vegetable market by Mandi board officials. An argument erupted between them after the Nihangs failed to produce curfew passes.

“An ASI’s (Assistant Sub Inspector) hand was chopped off by a sword. A Station House Officer of Sadar Patiala sustained an injury on his elbow and another official suffered an injury on his arm in the attack,” Sidhu said, reported news agency PTI.

According to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 19 new coronavirus cases were reported as of 8:00 AM on Apr 12 in Punjab. This takes the total recorded cases of COVID-19 in Punjab to 151. Among the total people infected as on date, 5 have recovered and 11 have passed away.
