Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case: Convicts’ plea to be heard today

Convict Mukesh Singh’s lawyer had asked the court to list his plea challenging the president’s rejection of his mercy plea “urgently”

New Delhi: In Nirbhaya murder and rape case the petition of one of the four convicts challenging the rejection of mercy should be listed on “top priority” if the execution is on February 1, on Monday Chief Justice of India SA Bobde said. A three-judge bench of Justices R Banumathi, Ashok Bhushan and AS Bopanna will hear the plea at 12.30 pm today.

Convict Mukesh Singh’s lawyer had asked the court to list his plea challenging the president’s rejection of his mercy plea “urgently”.

“If somebody is going to be executed on February 1, then the matter is of top priority,” said the Chief Justice SA Bobade, asking the lawyer to approach the court registry.

On Saturday the plea filed asked for the death warrant for the February 1 convicts to be cancelled.

Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Singh and Pawan Gupta are to hanged at 6 a.m. on Saturday. Their last-minute plea has been largely seen as desperate attempts to stall their hanging for 2012 gang-rape and murder that left the country shocked and grieving.
