Reportedly, Rahul Gandhi has asked all party Chief Ministers, state unit chiefs, MPs and party office bearers to be part of the process of picking the next chief.
New Delhi After days of delay in selecting its new leadership, Congress party is expected to announce its new chief today. The party functionaries will meet for the Congress Working Committee meeting- the highest decision-making body of the party. The deliberations have been going on for three months, but the party was unable to pick a president.
After the embarrassing defeat in 2019 Lok Sabha elections, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi offered to step down. Two days after the results were announced, the Gandhi scion resigned from his post. however, the CWC meeting passed a resolution which did not accept it. many senior leaders tried to convince Rahul Gandhi out of the resignation, but he was firm on resigning. In July, he made his resignation public. Reportedly, he also said that the new president should not be from the Gandhi family.
With the CWC meet today, the veil of suspicion on who will be the next Congress chief be finally lifted. Reportedly, Rahul Gandhi has asked all party Chief Ministers, state unit chiefs, MPs and party office bearers to be part of the process of picking the next chief. This is being seen as an attempt to open up the process so that the decision will not be overpowered by the Delhi Congress team. Some sources say that Mukul Wasnik and Mallikarjun Kharge are the front-runners for the job.
Without any clear leadership, the Congress party seems confused, which was evident in the Budget session as well. Even on the matter as crucial as Article 370, the party seemed divided. While the Old guards like P Chidambaram and Ghulam Nabi Azad criticized the government for their decision, a younger lot including Milind Deora, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Janardan Dwivedi supported the Modi govt’s move.
